Our Visit To An Elephant Sanctuary

This morning we had an early pick up from the Singharat Guesthouse and travelled East for an hour on mostly good well paved roads to the Elephant Sanctuary. This facility takes care of retired and mall treated elephants.  There are 14 animals well enough to give rides to tourists.  After their day's work they are returned to a large enclosed area of forest to relax in "social" groups.
The organisation seemed to be well run with a resident vet and volunteers who come  to take care of the animals on short term stays. There is a very nice looking resort attached to it too. Between it and the fees we day trippers pay the facility is able to meet it's running costs.

Boat journey on River Khan.

Enjoying the ride.

Villagers in this area making a living from fishing and growing crops in allotments.  They also supply the Elephant village with sugar cane and corn to feed the animals.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch in the most beautiful surroundings with this nice couple from Germany. They are on an extensive tour of South East Asia and plan to be in Siem Reap next week where we hope to meet them at New Home.  One of the joys of travelling is meeting others with whom you exchange stories and recommendations for accomodation and sight seeing.

The waterfalls.

Mum and calf.

What big eyes you have...

I know, I know...guilty as charged!  Why did I chose to continue taking the photo when my travelling companion was falling over?  I thought it was photo opportunity not to be missed :)  Apparently she tried to duck as the elephant passed with a metre long piece of cane in it's mouth.

This young couple were doing laundry with great results.

The intrepid travellers.  The mahout was taking the photo!

Colour of knuckles?  WHITE!

Our walk to the water.

Our elephants await.

Beautiful lotus.
